On this day in 2014 my Mark Lanegan Band poster debuted at the show in Seattle at the Neptune Theater. This was created for the tour supporting Mark's album "Phantom Radio". When I approached this design I wanted to convey something that captured Lanegan's gritty and authentic voice with something old-school and analog. I began looking at old radio's online from the 30's and 40's and came across this Zenith Art-Deco tube radio and fell in love with the look. It was perfect and I loved the vintage Zenith radio logo with the lightning bolt coming off the Z. In my head I instantly saw a Lanegan logo in the same style with the lighting bolt coming off his L. I had the radio nailed and now I needed to add a phantom. The Robert Johnson art that I came up with for the PNE "27 Club" poster is one of my favorite images I've come up with over the years and knew that was it. One of Mark's nicknames was "Old Scratch" aka, The Devil. A legend that died in the era of that Zenith radio and was the original and first 27 Club member? Perfect! I then got to work on it and made RJ warped and reaching out to turn the station on the radio. Mark LOVED this concept and poster and it's one of my personal favorites that I designed for him. I miss working directly with him and hearing his excitement when I came up with something that he really liked. It was a true blessing and honor to not only work with one of my all time favorite musicians ever but to get to know him as a friend, and as he wrote in the Introduction of my book, "An indispensable ally". Working with him directly from 2012 to 2020 was one of my favorite creative periods in my entire career and I'll always cherish it.
