This is my very first print of the year. With the 50th anniversary of the Led Zeppelin IV album recently in November of 2021 I was inspired to create a new art print of one of my favorite songs on the album; ‘Going to California’. I created an art print for the same album 10 years ago for a Zeppelin IV themed showing in London at the Flood Gallery for the song ‘Black Dog’. Even though I’ve been creating Rock posters for almost 30 years now I feel that I’ve only created my best work in the last decade of my career. It was fun to revisit this historic album once again with the growth that I’ve accomplished in my artistry.
I’ve read that the song ‘Going to California’ was originally conceived as an homage to the idyllic free spirited women of the late 60’s/ early 70’s in the sunshine state. A major inspiration was apparently Joni Mitchell and the greater folk music scene coming out of Los Angeles at the time. ‘Mountains and the canyons start to tremble and shake, the children of the sun begin to awake’ was in regard to the earthquakes of southern California and specifically Laurel Canyon above Hollywood where many musicians of the day lived including Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Doors, Mamas & the Papas, The Monkees, Love, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt and The Eagles. I wanted to create and capture the same experience that used to be had reveling at an album cover so there’s quite a bit of imagery in the print that reflect the lyrics of this amazing song and the vibe of that moment in what was truly a magical place and time in music history. See if you can find them all.
